Glocal Justice: Toward an Equity Imperative in International Education
featuring Amer F. Ahmed, EdD
Symposium Description: In the wake of a global pandemic and rising anti-racist consciousness, International Education is facing unprecedented realities which are forcing institutions to adapt. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed social inequities in the U.S. plus the interdependence of global and local (‘glocal’) factors that impact existing inequality in our world. Higher Education leaders must confront infrastructure that bifurcates the work of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) from International Education. Dr. Ahmed contends that U.S. Higher Ed can no longer afford this divide and provides practical examples of how we can bridge DEI and International Education.
Amer F. Ahmed, EdD (he/him) is the Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at the University of Vermont and Faculty in its Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration program. As an internationally-recognized practitioner and thought leader, Amer leverages diverse identities, experiences, and theoretical perspectives to advance inclusive excellence and build capacity within institutions and organizations.
Dr. Ahmed is the Founder and CEO of AFA Diversity Consulting, LLC, a practice dedicated to enhancing the development of organizations through intercultural leadership, professional development, assessment, and strategic change. In addition, Amer is co-founder of Global Inclusion, a certification program bridging the Intercultural field with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work globally.
Prior to UVM, Amer was Executive Director of Equity & Inclusivity and Chief Diversity Officer at Dickinson College and has held faculty appointments and strategic leadership roles at schools including the University of Massachusetts, Swarthmore College, and the University of Michigan.
